Old White  17 -- Montgomery  5

 

 

Montgomery, AL -- Saturday, March 28th 2009. by "the toe".

 

The day started off gloomy and it rained almost all the way to Montgomery. When we arrived, the clouds lifted at little and Old White took the field to claim its playoff spot in D2 South.

 

Montgomery had a very big team 1-15, and used brute force and kicking to keep the game scoreless the 1st 25 minutes. A penalty on OW’s 10M line provided Montgomery’s only points of the day as their #6 ran it in the corner with 3 OW players on his back.

 

Old White continued to play tough and played the remainder of the half in Montgomery’s 50. Several penalty kicks were missed by Old White, but the pressure was on Montgomery. An OW broken lineout on Montgomery’s 22 was handled nicely at the back of the lineup and went from #6 to #7 to #10 to a charging #12 who off-loaded at the last second to a large cape buffalo(aka #5) for the score under the posts. Halftime, game tied 5-5 after the missed conversion.

 

Substitutions were made at halftime, and after a fiery talking to by Coach Francesco, Old White looked impressive in the 2nd half. Montgomery’s ‘large’ team began to tire and aggressive play by the forwards and good handling skills in the backs lead to a score by #13 in the corner. 10 – 5 Old White up.

 

Moments later, Montgomery mishandled an OW kick on their 40, and #20 made them pay with a quick kick through, followed by picking the ball up and offloading to #19 who dove in from the 5M line under the post. Conversion by #8 and the game was sealed, 17-5.

 

The air had been let out of Montgomery, they made a few substitutions, but the pressure was too great.

 

All 22 OW players got on the field and contributed to this great, (and old boys correct me if I’m wrong) historic win as Old White’s first 2nd XV to make it to the Division 2 playoffs. Thanks to Keith, Luke, Riaan, Kevin Ward, and Dan Baerwalde for coming to cheer us on.
